Care of Your Cosmetic Restorations
After receiving your beautiful new smile, we know that you will want to keep it like new for years to come. Your new smile represents a major personal and financial investment for you. Proper maintenance and professional follow up care will keep your smile great.
Here are our recommendations for care of your investment:
- We recommend having your teeth cleaned by our experienced dental hygienists. They have special training in caring for cosmetic dentistry. They use special techniques for porcelain veneers and crowns. We recommend having your teeth cleaned at least every six months. Dr. Melnick will examine your entire mouth at these visits. Rest assured that our hygienists will protect your cosmetic dentistry and will not use hard instruments or abrasive materials on your restorations, as they can dull and mar the porcelain surface.
- Fluoride treatments are recommended and a special fluoride is used. We use a neutral fluoride so that it will not weaken the bond strength. Acidic fluoride solutions can also affect negatively the surface of your restorations.
- Some toothpastes can be abrasive to porcelain veneers and crowns. We will recommend the one best for you. We want to be gentle to your cosmetic dentistry. As usual, floss and brush daily. A cavity can form on the natural tooth if your home care is lacking as well as gum problems may develop.
- Be aware of certain mouthwashes that contain alcohol. Read the ingredients of any mouth wash you use regularly and consult us as to its affect on cosmetic dentistry.
- There are some restrictions on what you can eat, such as do not bite on hard objects, such as pens, pencils or even your fingernails. If you grind or clench your teeth, you need to wear a night guard to protect your porcelain veneers and crowns. If you are in athletic sports, a mouth guard is advised. We can make one for you that gives the highest protection level available.
Your beautiful new smile needs to be cared for well. You will receive outstanding dentistry, but it is your care that is needed for your new smile. We are always ready to help.
