Complete Dental Examination

We believe that a complete dental examination is extremely important for all new patients and at appropriate intervals for our current patients. We determine what is appropriate by evaluating the individual needs of each patient. We do not believe in rigid standards. In addition, we feel that the more limited periodic exams with each visit add to a persons well being.

Many recent studies and our own experience found strong links between dental health and several serious medical problems. Our research on this topic reveals that there is really little doubt these days that heart disease and gum disease are related. The comprehensive dental exam has now become more important than ever to your total health.

Think of a comprehensive dental examination as an equivalent to a physicals exam by your physician. Disease can be detected early and appropriate treatment begun. Dental problems only get worse over time and the earlier the problem is detected the easier it will be to care for. We have also found that many people enjoy great peace of mind in knowing all is well.

We provide the following care in our examinations.

  • Medical history including medications that might be related to dental care
  • Dental history of prior treatment
  • Head, neck, skin, and lymph node evaluation
  • Oral soft tissues exam
  • Oral cancer screening exam, visual and digital
  • Evaluation of all tooth surfaces for decay
  • TMJ (jaw joint) function and health evaluation
  • Bite Evaluations and enamel wear measurements
  • X-rays as necessary and appropriate for patient
  • Cosmetic and smile evaluation
  • Recording status of crowns, fillings, and other restorations
  • Periodontal (gum) examination including records for late comparisons.
  • Mold of the teeth when needed for later evaluation
  • Digital photographs in cosmetic cases
  • Intra-oral high magnification/fiber optic video examination
  • Existing restorations evaluation

We feel that if we don't provide a complete exam, we have failed to give our patients an important service. An accurate diagnosis can only be based on a full understanding of each person individual situation. Our goal is to help you keep your teeth for a lifetime. With prevention, thorough examinations and regular visits we have had great success at achieving this goal.
